Unibet has been dealt with a serious blow in the state of Ontario as the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO), has issued them with a fixed penalty of CAN$48,000, (£31,192). The decision came after Unibet were seen to have advertising and bonus rules.
The alleged incident occurred in May 2022, and came from Unibet posting inducements that promoted generous welcome offers. AGCO did not approve of this and unanimously agreed that this was outside the standards that are currently in place that prohibit the advertising of bonuses and other gambling offers. The AGCO has set marketing limitations that they expect operators to follow, which include direct advertising after player consent.
Unibet was deemed to have made its marketing far too broad, thus, a fixed penalty was in order. Unibet is planning to appeal the decision, which is well within their rights. If they choose to do so, the decision will come down to the licence appeal tribunal.
“We expect all registered operators to achieve and maintain the high standards of responsible gambling, player protection and game integrity,” AGCO chief executive and registrar Tom Mungham said.
“The AGCO will continue to monitor these gaming sites’ activities, and ensure they are meeting their obligations under Ontario’s Gaming Control Act and the Standards.”
