Michigan could be soon become the latest US state to legalise online sports betting. Governors in the state believe that a vote on the deal could take place this week, with talks progressing well. Along with sports betting, online casino would also become regulated here.
According to State Senator Curtis Hertel Jr.: “Negotiations are going well”.
A Senate Reform Committee for the topic is planned to take place today.
iGaming in Michigan
Although online sports betting and casino aren’t currently regulated, iLottery is doing well here. Despite rules stating that only online games with the same mechanics as before 2004 can be offered, online sales have passed $1 million this year. It’s also worth noting that Michigan has a population of just under 10 million in total.
The new online gambling bill
The path to regulation has changed along the way in Michigan. Earlier this year, there was speculation that removing online casino and focusing on sports betting would be the only way to pass a deal. But it now seems as though both will be allowed.
Proposed tax rates have also shifted. In October, it was announced that a progressive system up to 26% would be put forward. There might still be movements regarding this, though. Figures want to ensure that schools are receiving a sufficient amount of funding from this legalisation, as they do when it comes to online lottery revenue.
Perhaps the biggest development in Michigan’s iGaming journey is how minds have been changed. At the end of October, Republican Rebekah Warren said that the written legislation would be vetoed in its then-existing terms. This related to 10 bills that were proposed in a package.
