Mobile wagering legalised in Oregon as SBTech launches in the state

Oregon has now legalised mobile wagering after the state lottery rolled out its SBTech-powered sportsbook offering Scoreboard.

The first mobile betting product entitled Scoreboard was launched by a US state lottery. This llows players to bet on a range of different sports with a variety of bet types such as live bets, futures and prop bets all being available.

SBTech and the Oregon State Lottery signed the contract in June this year, it covers land-based wagering, with retail kiosks also to be rolled out early next year.

SBTech US president Melissa Riahei said: “We are thrilled to be working hand-in-hand with the Oregon Lottery to launch this exciting new form of entertainment in the state.

“The Oregon Lottery is true a pioneer in this space, being the first lottery in the US to launch online sports betting.

“We look forward to providing our innovative and experience-driven products, alongside our full range of managed services, to make this endeavor a huge success for the state of Oregon and its citizens.”

Oregon Lottery director Barry Pack has explained that the launch of the market has started an exciting time for the busines, “ SBTech is an invaluable partner to us, and we look forward to using SBTech’s innovative products to provide an engaging, entertaining and seamless experience for our players,” he said.

After originally being scheduled for September, the mobile roll-out will coincide with the start of the National Football League (NFL) season. The delay of the fine-tuning of the product prevented that. This was thought to have been a better strategy rather than simply getting a product to market at the earliest possible opportunity.

Public information manager, Matthew Shelby told iGB North America that he was ensuring a smooth player experience, rather than rushing it into the market.

The projected revenue from the lottery has come to $141.2m over the first three full years post-launch, where the total handle for the period is set to hit $1.6bn.

Oregon is seen to be the third World Lottery Association member to award SBTech a contract to operate sports betting, with Sweden’s Svenska Spel and Finland’s Veikkaus also being selecting following tender processes.
