The rise of TikTok has seen social media change in front of our eyes. More and more platforms are opting to incorporate video into what they offer consumers, with Instagram reels proving to be a true contender.
Instagram has changed its focus from photographs to videos for this reason. They inherited the idea of having a reels section, which allows people to upload video content similar to TikTok. This has clearly been advantageous for them as reels are now generating the most reach on Instagram.
Several studies have backed up this data, one being hypeAuditor. They conducted a study that analysed over 77 million Instagram posts throughout the month of July, in order to analyse the latest trends.
The data that they found was that photographs are still the most common pieces of content uploaded to the platform, with carousel images being second. Despite this, they noted that reels – even though they are the third most popular content pieces uploaded to the platform – are gaining the highest number of reaches by a very large margin. The data was collected by analysing the number of people who saw each post. Data has also shown that reels are generating a far larger number of likes, whilst images are still receiving the most comments.
Are reels the one true competitor to TikTok?
