An illegal gambling network has been shut down by authorities in Columbia. The illegal gambling ring was said to be bringing in COP3bn (£640,000) per month before it was shut down. The La Federación Colombiana de Empresarios de Juegos de Suerte y Azar (Fecoljuegos) has recently announced the closure of this 15-member group after a long investigation.
Los Poker
The group to be shut down by the Columbian authorities was known as “Los Poker”. The members came from across the country and operated illegal using 62 different URLs. The gaming services were said to be provided by a Malta-based supplier.
According to reports, the 15-member group also targeted players from Ecuador and Peru. The group was made up of many experts including those well-versed in computer systems.
Paying gambling taxes
The Fecoljuegos has stated that the COP3bn (640,000) seized will go towards good causes in Columbia. Around COP500m (£109,000) will be used to pay gambling taxes. This will then go towards sport and health services in the county.
The investigation has been ongoing for over two years and has only recently come to a close. It was led by the Columbian Attorney General’s office, alongside some top Colonels in the department.
This group might have been shut down but there are still some further illegal gambling operations around the world that need to be tackled. It is clear that governments are stepping up and trying to reduce the risks for players who might get sucked into this kind of operation.
