Going to Glastonbury as an influencer: making the most of your music-themed SM

With the reputation it has as the gem of festival season and a line-up that offers something for everyone, Glastonbury has fully cemented itself in the centre of British culture. With headliners that include the Arctic Monkeys, Guns n Roses, Elton John, Lizzo, Lana Del Rey, Lil Naz X, Cat Stevens, and a whole host of others, it’s sure to bring in viewers from around the world.

And it’s sure to be a spectacle of an event, which means you’re naturally going to want to get some content out of it. Everything from the music to your outfit to some fun shenanigans can be made into content, as long as you know how to do it right. So how do you? Well, we have a guide to explain it. Read on for our tips on getting the most social media marketing potential from your trip to Glastonbury.

Understand your camera

There are so many people taking footage at Glastonbury. Sure, most of them are for personal use and most of them are fuzzy videos of people drowning out the band with their own screaming, but that’s what you can learn from.

As an influencer, you’ll be expected to offer high-quality content, especially at music festivals where there is a big case of sensory overload. The colours, the lights, the outfits, the music, all make for a great photo or video. But that’s of no use when you’re offering pixelated zooms of the star on stage looking like an ant in the distance.

If you are taking footage at a music festival, learn from everything you hate: high quality, no screaming over the music (unless you’re the subject of the content), and vibrant and engaging content. All of that means that you need to know how to really work your camera, and you might even want to upgrade from your smartphone camera to a DSLR.

Take a new angle

Speaking of your content, you might want to brainstorm a few new ideas for it. There are certain pillars that every influencer hits: the outfits, the photos of the event, the gig itself, and then they call it a day. You might want to explore the festival. There is so much more to Glastonbury than just the main stage. Festivals nowadays know fine well that if their guests aren’t actually an influencer, they want to emulate them and get lots of gorgeous and fun photos, so they usually provide a few photo opportunities in the form of activities. Fairground rides, popup shops and popup photo booths, etc.

But also, think about your genre as an influencer. Music, beauty, and fashion influencers have a clear path to content at the festival, but where do you as say a gaming influencer come into it? Or a cooking influencer? Maybe you’ll go around trying all the street vendors, or cosplay as a gaming character. Look up the Glastonbury map to learn what there is beyond the line-up.

Partner up with other influencers

Glastonbury is one of the biggest events of the UK calendar, and definitely the biggest in music. This means that whether they’re there to influence or not, a lot of people are going to be there. So run through your little black book of influencers, keep an eye on social media for anyone you like mentioning it, and reach out to collaborate. You’ll get double the content and split a bigger audience between the two of you if you partner up.

Split the time

Once upon a time, influencers were destroying their bodies at Coachella. Whose idea was it to wear these ridiculous outfits that you couldn’t walk in, never mind dance in, to a weekend of music?

So, say you still want to go all out? Well, for one thing, I think walking around Glastonbury or even Coachella, you’ll soon see it isn’t the fashion trendsetter it once was. Or you’ll see that the athleisure trend that came out of lockdown is still alive today: meaning, everyone’s willing to be a lot more comfortable.

Not convinced? Then bring a change of clothes. Maybe you do want to put together an outfit – or a few – that get eyes on you but don’t feel good after an hour. Just bring a change of clothes. Split your time between strutting your stuff around the festival and taking pictures, and being comfortable while you raise the roof.
