Flutter spending heavily on responsible gambling

Flutter Entertainment is spending over €100 million per year on responsible gambling initiatives in the UK and Ireland, according to the company’s Chief Executive Conor Grant.

The company, which owns several brands including Paddy Power, Sky Bet, Betfair, and Tombola, has detailed that it has spent approximately €54.6 million across both countries in the first half of 2022 as gambling industry legislation is set to be reviewed and tightened.

The news comes as Ireland readies new gambling legislation, looking to regulate the industry in the country and modernize the existing gambling laws. This will be particularly relevant for Flutter, which has its headquarters in Ireland.

“Yes, we’ve taken some pain, but we think that this is absolutely the right thing to do, and we think everyone else is going to have to do the same thing eventually.

“It’s very simple for me, it’s about building a sustainable business. We don’t want customers for 10 minutes; we want them for 10 years. No one wants to benefit from others’ misfortune,” said Grant.

Flutter’s responsible gambling division currently employs around 230 people. It uses a range of methods to safeguard players, including deposit limits and a ban on the use of credit cards to bet in Ireland.

Additionally, an alert system comprised of 270 triggers is in place to identify and flag players that are displaying signs of problem gambling.
