The newly appointed Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has appointed a new Culture Secretary in place of Nadine Dorries, who has stepped down from the position.
Michelle Donelan has been appointed the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. What this means, in particular, is that the government’s review of the 2005 Gambling Act is soon to resume. Donelan is expected to look at the reform of the 2005 Gambling Act in the “coming weeks” as her first task as Culture Secretary.
The white paper outlining how the government should tackle industry reform has been hit with delay after delay, not least due to the resignation of the British former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
Michael Dugher, chief executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, said: “On behalf of the 119,000 people whose jobs are supported by our members – from the high street to hospitality, from tourism to tech – I’d like to congratulate Michelle Donelan on her new role as Secretary of State for DCMS.”
“We have been working extremely closely with the DCMS over many years to help the government find the right balance in the Gambling Review, so that we continue to drive big changes and higher standards on safer gambling to better protect the most vulnerable, while at the same time ensuring that the millions of people who enjoy an occasional flutter perfectly safely and responsibly have the freedom to do so.”
