Online retail and entertainment giant Amazon has announced that it is renaming and rebranding its free streaming TV service from IMDb TV to Amazon Freevee.
Unlike Amazon Prime, the subscription-based service Amazon offers, this service is completely free for users to stream and is supported by ad revenue. This style of service is also rising in demand thanks to a marketplace that is currently filled with subscription services.
This is not the first time that the service has been rebranded too, having been launched in 2019 under the name IMDb Freedive.
Though Amazon has yet to release any sort of streaming metrics or data regarding just IMDb TV, it has stated previously that it has 120 million monthly active users across its video content.
Head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, said: “We’re looking forward to building on this momentum with an increasing slate of inventive and broadly appealing Originals, and are excited to establish Freevee as the premier AVOD service with content audiences crave.”
Though subscription-based services still rule supreme, we are likely to see an increase in options for a free streaming TV service as demand grows. Amazon is clearly attempting to play both sides of the market so they can fully take advantage of everything the streaming market has to offer the modern TV viewer.
