French football club RC Strasbourg has announced that online sportsbook and poker room Winmax has become its ‘principal shirt sponsor’.
The partnership will last for at least three seasons, starting from the 2020/2021 campaign which kicks off later this month.
Strasbourg are one of France’s oldest clubs, having been formed in 1906. They secured a mid-table finish in the most recent prematurely-ended season.
Ligue 1 itself is also preparing to commence with its biggest-ever sponsorship commitment in place.
A personal connection
Winmax CEO Alexandre Roos is a native of the French province of Alsace. As such, he feels a personal connection to the operator’s new shirt sponsorship deal.
He had the following to say about the partnership.
“It is a great pride, for Christophe Schaming (co-founder) and myself, to start this partnership with Racing. Being both Alsatians, this club represents our roots and reminds us of great moments of joy and emotion.”
Ligue 1 ready to start afresh
Last season’s top two French footballing campaigns were cut short in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The final table was decided on a points-per-game model, which resulted in Paris Saint-Germain being crowned champions. Strasbourg, meanwhile, finished 10th.
While France was locked down, food delivery service UBER Eats secured a deal to acquire naming rights to Ligue 1. According to the French Football Federation, this will be the division’s largest-ever sponsorship commitment.
Ligues 1 and 2 also have a new betting partner, having recently penned a deal with Betclic. The operator’s sponsorship commitments will last until the end of the 2022/2023 campaign.
